Android One and Lollipop Rants | The Friday Debate Podcast 003 | Android Authority

8 months ago 01:01:53

Android One was a program that Google announced last year at I/O, supposedly bringing the best Android smartphone experience to developing markets. Since then, it could be argued that it hasn't quite succeeded. Josh is joined once again by Andrew Grush, Joe Hindy, and Jonathan Feist to discuss all of this. Later in the show, they also go on a small rant about Lollipop!

Thoughts on Smartphones and Wearables | The Friday Debate Podcast 004 | Android Authority

8 months ago 01:00:38

Do you have a smartwatch on right now? If not, why do you think that is so? These are questions that the Android Authority podcast team explore in this edition of the Friday Debate Podcast, episode 4! Lanh Nguyen of the YouTube team joins host Joshua Vergara and co-hosts Joseph Hindy and Jonathan Feist to talk about wearables - in particular, smartwatches - and why they might not have met our expectations so far. They delve into the reasons why smartwatches might not be the next big thing and what needs to happen in order for them to achieve that status. For a short time, the gang talks about their lives with watches in general - and learn that Joe is a little outnumbered in that particular subject.

Sony Mobile's Decline? | The Friday Debate Podcast 005 | Android Authority

7 months ago 01:03:59

Sony recently announced that it would take less risks in the mobile and television divisions, bringing focus more to the Playstation brand. Our guys have seen Sony grow and iterate often in the past couple years, but this news brought the gang together for a very spirited discussion about why Sony Mobile might be going by the wayside. Their discussion gets nostalgic with memories of Sony's past, shifts to some Playstation talk, and then even moves into some talk about gaming! This might be our most packed episode yet, so fire it up and start listening!

Special Pre-MWC with PocketNow and MobileGeeks! | The Friday Debate Podcast 006 | Android Authority

7 months ago 01:29:14

In this special edition of the FDP, Josh gets together with a couple very special guests to talk about the devices they will be covering at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Michael Fisher (@captain2phones) of PocketNow (@pocketnow) and Nicole Scott (@nicole_scooter) of MobileGeeks (@mobilegeekscom) join the show!

While pondering over HTC, Alcatel, LG, and Samsung devices, quite a few fun moments happen in the hotel room where what Josh calls "The Trifecta of Collaboration" recorded this special episode. Among them are a botched tribute by Josh to the late Leonard Nimoy, talks about Barcelona and its beauty, and the exact opposite of beauty as Michael Fisher expresses his disgust at La Sagrada Familia.

It's a jam-packed, longer-than-usual episode that you won't want to miss. Enjoy!

Best thing at MWC 2015? | The Friday Debate Podcast 007 | Android Authority

7 months ago 01:12:33

MWC was incredibly busy but the guys got together to talk about their favorite things from the show. Youtube reviewer Lanh Nguyen joins Josh with the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief Darcy Lacouvee as they recount various happenings like HTC's announcements and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. Along the way, they reminisce about the beautiful and busy city of Barcelona, Spain, and even speak about video games. Darcy brings his business acumen to the podcast and gives us (and you) a look at some phone company inner workings.

It's not often that the Android Authority guys can get together in a room and just hang out - so we hope you enjoy one of these opportunities via the Friday Debate Podcast!

Our Tech Origin Stories | The Friday Debate Podcast 008 | Android Authority

6 months ago 01:13:35

Andrew Grush picks a pretty light topic for our first podcast back from MWC 2015 - our tech origin stories. Josh is joined by the usual co-hosts to talk about how they all started in the world of tech. Andrew Grush, Joseph Hindy, and Jonathan Feist all share precious memories and then Josh circles it back by connecting those upbringings to where they are today.

Specs vs Experience | The Friday Debate Podcast 009 | Android Authority

6 months ago 01:07:19

Don't forget to talk about the 'cast with the hashtag #FDP and tag Android Authority across social media networks!

The flagship reviews and some techinical difficulties kept the Friday Debate Podcast from releasing on time - but to be fair, we recorded this on Friday so it still makes sense! Jokes aside, we have Lanh filling in for Andrew this week as we talk about the age-old battle between specifications and user experience. With phones like the Moto E coming along with all of these high profile releases from Samsung and HTC, we talk about whether the general usage experience really needs high end specifications. We also ponder how raw specs drive perception of a phone. And finally, we touch upon the Uh Oh program that was just recently announced by HTC in which users can get a brand new phone when their current One M9 fails or gets damaged.

It's a pretty packed episode, so make sure you tune into this episode #9 of the FDP!

Sci-Fi Today | The Friday Debate Podcast 010 | Android Authority

6 months ago 01:32:02

Technical difficulties kept the Friday Debate Podcast from releasing last week, but after a lot of fiddling around with the audio, we're bringing you a DOUBLE FEATURE this week for the FDP.

Today, Josh is joined by the usual group of hosts to talk science fiction - well, not necessarily sci-fi but instead the kinds of technology we wanted while growing up that we might be seeing today. We bounce around the ideas of jet-packs, virtual reality, smart homes, and all of their implications - while getting caught in a lot of tangents that make for one of the longest editions of the podcast we've had yet.

Come join us and don't forget to listen to the podcast on all of the podcasting networks, as well has following us all on social media - the links for everything are in the full post for the podcast below! Soon we will be taking your own questions and topics, so give us all a shoutout all over the place with the hashtag #FDP!

Chrome OS | The Friday Debate Podcast 011 | Android Authority

6 months ago 01:05:57

And to round out our double feature for today, we have the team back again for a round of Chrome OS talk. This past week (on April Fool's Day, no less) we got a number of announcements regarding the Chrome ecosystem. Chromebit is a new platform that will put a fully functioning Chrome OS onto any HDMI-capable television, Chrome OS itself is getting some good Android testing capabilities, and Chromebooks continue to grow. And with all of that in mind, the team ponders: do Chrome and cloud based solutions make sense for the kind of users we are? With Jonathan Feist as the only one in the group sporting a Chromebook; Josh, Joe, and Andrew get a crash course on what could be the future of computing.

As always, keep it tuned to Android Authority and visit the FDP page on AndroidAuthority.com for all of the links to relevant stories and social media!

Apple Watch, Galaxy S6, and One M9 | The Friday Debate Podcast 012 | Android Authority

6 months ago 01:15:24

This week, the team gets together to talk about upcoming devices - in particular, the new phones from Samsung and HTC. Our main question centered on which phone our hosts would buy with their hard-earned money. But before that talk, they speak about the Apple Watch and what it might mean for the future of smartwatches. They soon realize that the Apple Watch isn't even out yet, even after talking about it at length in different perspectives. Oops.

We're making changes to the podcast very soon - nothing too big, but it will involve all of you listeners and fans! Stay tuned for all of that and check our poll for what we might talk about next week!

Flagships vs Midrange | The Friday Debate Podcast 013 | Android Authority

5 months ago 01:24:26

This week we welcome another guest to the podcast, writer Nirave Gondhia as we take on a topic that was picked by you, our fans. A poll posted on Google+ yielded our topic for this week - the question of whether flagship devices still make sense with a growing midrange market. Phones coming in a lower price point are gradually bringing high-end experiences, with perhaps just a few holes left in their evolution. So, we ponder the question of how midrange devices fare against the current crop of flagships from the likes of Samsung, HTC, and future phones from the likes of LG and Sony. We run the gamut and veer off course a few times, but that's just how it goes on the FDP.

Follow our poll on Google+ once again this week and let us know which topic you want us to talk about next! Thank you for your participation and we look forward to seeing your responses!

Project Fi | The Friday Debate Podcast 014 | Android Authority

5 months ago 01:12:38

The gang gets together, catches up on the week's personal happenings, and then gets talking about Project Fi. For those who don't know, Project Fi is a new wireless service (basically a MVNO) by Google that focuses on the ability to move from mobile networks and Wi-Fi hotspots on the fly, as well as some simpler pricing for talk, text, and data. The functionality to switch among networks is only found on the Nexus 6, currently, however, but the gang talks about future possibilities. Project Fi is certainly an anticipated move from Google, but are we really happy with the details that have thus far come to light? Find out on the FDP!

FDP 015: LG G4 with Special Guests!

5 months ago 01:05:47

That's right, we've changed the name of our podcast to just FDP. We saw that you guys like the hashtag #FDP and we wanted to keep it, too! And among other reasons, "Friday Debate" just didn't make as much sense anymore. So, we are now the FDP - where P stands for Podcast.

This week, we have a really special episode with some very special friends. Josh was in NYC for the LG G4 launch event and the couple days were eventual, to say the least - the event itself was at the top of One World Trade Center with stunning views of Manhattan and this podcast was recorded ON A BOAT. A trek to a ship floating off the shores of the Hudson River eventually brought Josh and his guests to what would be the backdrop for this week's FDP.

Josh is joined by Michael Fisher (@captain2phones) of Pocketnow, Florence Ion (@ohthatflo) of Greenbot, and Dom Esposito (@macmixing) of 9to5Google and YouTube.com/dom! They talk about Project Fi to warm up and then get into the LG G4 itself, with plenty of fun tangents along the way. And be forewarned, the environment does mean a lot of background noise including helicopters and a creaking boat. But it's still a really fun listen so fire up your podcast app or head to YouTube to enjoy some bonus behind the scenes footage!

FDP 016: Android M and LG G4

5 months ago 01:37:05

The gang gets together for another episode of the FDP! Yes, we changed the name of the podcast and in the beginning of this spirited conversation the team talks about why it happened. Jonathan Feist, Joseph Hindy, Andrew Grush, and Nirave Gondhia join Joshua Vergara for a longer talk this week as they go through a number of different topics. They think of what the new Android M iteration might be called (and, true to form, Joe comes up with a left-field answer) and then get into what features they would want from the next iteration of Google's mobile operating system. A talk about the newly reviewed LG G4 rounds out the conversation, including a much needed discussion about how we view good battery life.

FDP 017: Ask us Anything!

4 months ago 01:32:08

The team gets together to respond to your burning questions for us! Instead of the usual poll that we put up on the Google+ page, we simply requested any and all of your questions that you wanted us to answer. And in this episode, we go through a number of different topics, not the least of which include Cyanogen and what we think the future of Android looks like.

It is the first of hopefully many Ask us Anything episodes that we want to make available on the FDP!

FDP 018 - Oppo R7 Launch with Guests

4 months ago 51:18

Darcy and Josh found themselves in China for the launch of a couple new Oppo smartphones, the R7 and R7 Plus. After seeing the phones and getting their content out, the guys also got to see the Oppo factory! But in a quiet, outdoor setting with smooth jazz in the background, Josh got Darcy and special guests Jaime Rivera (@jaime_rivera) of Pocketnow (@pocketnow) and James Pickham (@jamesrwp) of TechRadar (@techradar) together to talk about the very event past couple of days. Reactions to the new Oppo phones and the factory are accompanied by thoughts on camera software and drinks!

FDP 019: Google I/O Redux

4 months ago 01:40:33

Josh's cold after much traveling kept last week from being podcast-full, but we're back now with a look back at the announcements made at Google I/O! After about a week, Joe gives his thoughts on Android M, Grushie and Nirave talk potential Huawei Nexus devices, and Feisty ponders on Google Cardboard/Expeditions and their effect on our children's manners. It's a full panel this week as we're heading into the summer, which should bring with it plenty of great new releases after the developments from I/O.

FDP 020: WWDC 2015, BlackBerry Android, and more!

3 months ago 01:33:30

Hot off the heels of Apple's WWDC 2015, the gang gets together for the weekly talk about all things Android! We know, that sounds a little off the rail, but with all that happened on stage at the keynote, the guys just had to react - mostly to Apple Music. But a number of different rumors and announcements appeared since and thus topics in this episode of the FDP range from a potential BlackBerry Android and a potential Galaxy S6 Edge Note! It's a jam-packed episode so hit that play button!

FDP 021: E3!

3 months ago 01:02:20

What happens when you inject an Android publication into one of the biggest gaming expos of the year? Well, they look at the future of Android gaming - while getting really distracted in the process. But that is just par for the course in this week's FDP as our guys on the floor - Josh, Lanh, Andrew, and Darcy - talk about everything from Star Wars: Battlefront, VR platforms, YouTube Gaming, and all of the mobile gaming goodness they could pack into three whole days at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

It was a wonderful time at E3 and we can't wait to share with you our experiences, so hit that play button and listen to this FDP!

022: Back At It!

3 months ago 01:16:28

Sorry for the lack of episode last week, but we have been hard at work to find the best weekly schedule to bring you the Android Authority Podcast every single week! And yes, we are changing the name one last time but that doesn't mean #FDP is completely dead - listen for the first 10 minutes to hear the explanation why!

But we aren't short of great discussion points this week, despite being down a couple people - the Honor brand returns, we explore how our opinions on people might change based on the phone they are using, and then we end with a discussion about a BIG debacle that occurred via Google Photos earlier this week. It's a great listen - so hit that download/play button!

023: Android Authority... After Hours

3 months ago 01:21:07

In a most interesting episode, Josh gets together with most of the typical panel - Joe Hindy, Andrew Grush, and Jonathan Feist - to talk about a new trend in VR. They manage to keep it from getting too uncomfortable and have a hilarious discussion about pornography in the mobile and VR spaces! From there, talk about a couple highly anticipated devices that are just a couple months away from release, and end on a quick discussion about pizza!

It's hardly a dull day at the Android Authority Podcast - discussing topics in Android every week.

024: Prime Day, Shmimeday

2 months ago 01:12:15

With Andrew Grush out with his family and Joe Hindy nursing a little illness, we have a panel including Nirave Gondhia and Jonathan Feist for this week's Android Authority Podcast! The guys talk about Prime Day and how much it pretty much sucked (but Amazon Prime is still amazing), how awesome the Huawei Nexus might be because it means more than just the device itself, and how mad Josh is about the new Galaxy A8.

It's another great episode of the Android Authority Podcast - discussing topics in Android every single week.

025: Moto X and OnePlus 2

2 months ago 01:21:53

From a mostly quiet garage in the middle of one of Southern California's hottest summer days, Josh gets together with Jonathan Feist, Andrew Grush, and returning guest Lanh Nguyen to talk about the big launches from the previous week. Unless you were under a rock for the past 7 days, you should know that we're talking about the Moto X and the OnePlus 2.

The fellas talk about why the Moto X might be one of the best phones to come out this year, and why the OnePlus 2 may have missed that mark.

2 months ago 01:09:37

In a week that falls between a few relly big launches, the AA Podcast team decides to table the Galaxy Note 5 talk in lieu of more pressing, security matters. Joshua Vergara is joined by Nirave Gondhia and Jonathan Feist to talk about the latest scare in the Android world: Stagefright. As a piece of malware that can effect nearly all Android devices, the guys talk about its dangers and whether or not we are all just paranoid. They then speak about any instances in tech that they have been attacked by malware.

With another Samsung launch comes every discussion about the new devices, their merits, and their faults. Unfortunately for the brand new Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and the S6 Edge Plus (happily called the "S6 Edge Big" by our podcasters), thoughts on the new smartphones seem lean toward the faults. And in this special live episode of the Android Authority Podcast, our guys on the ground - Joshua Vergara and Lanh Nguyen - are joined by YouTube personality and reviewer Dom Esposito (@macmixing) to talk Note 5, S6 Edge Big, a little Moto X, and a bit more beyond. Jonathan Feist, Andrew Grush and Joe Hindy share their thoughts on Samsung’s newest large sized phones. In this grab bag of an episode we also discuss a major Android Wear update, Project Ara, Alphabet and the official name for the next Android release, Android 6.0 Marshmallow. BlackBerry enjoys some airtime for their slide-out keyboard equipped Android phone and we dive into a potential killer of the self proclaimed ‘flagship killer’ – Lenovo may have outdone OnePlus at their own game. Without some of the big players coming to the show this time around, the crew ponders the growing smartwatch game, especially considering the lust over the Huawei Watch and the newfound buzz over the Samsung Gear S2. Though phones like the Huawei Mate S and the 4k capable Sony Xperia Z5 Premium did appear at this show, they seem to take second fiddle to a long discussion regarding the pros and cons to current smartwatch offerings. Before getting into his memories of IFA and how CITA was going, Josh brings up an exciting new mobile Pokemon game and the guys realize just how old (or young) they truly are. Podcast 033: If a Nexus leaks, will you still buy it?

210 weeks ago 01:14:24

What starts off as a collection of selfie stick belittling, turns into Andrew Grush, Joe Hindy and Nirave Gondhia following along as Jonathan Feist pretends to lead the show. We talk about Blackberry and their new Priv, previously known as Venice, which leads to ribbing Josh while he's not there to defend himself. Google has two new devices coming this week, the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P.  We wanted to say little more on the subject, saving our thoughts for next week, but our discussion on the current leak culture took us right back to the Nexus devices. Will you be purchasing a new Nexus device, or at least holding off another purchase until you see what Google has to offer? Huawei was a recurring topic throughout the show, we all had mostly great things to say about them and their products, leaving us highly anticipating the Nexus 6P, which is also built by Huawei. I hope you have as much fun listening as we did recording.

034: Nexus, Nexus, Nexus!

209 weeks ago 01:16:37

Google recently announced two new Nexus devices, is there anything more to say? Of course there is. Josh leads the entire panel through some talk about school road mayhem, a slight point of contention for Joe and Nirave. Andrew and Jonathan were a little more relaxed about it. Conversation shifts to tablets and TabTimes, ever so briefly, before we dive into the new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. We make the obvious comparisons to other devices like the Moto X Pure and ponder why LG announced the V10 right in the mix. Although not an after thought, Google also announced the Pixel C, a large productivity tablet with keyboard cover, not exactly a game changer, or is it? Join us for this and more, and we hope you have as much fun as we did. (Even though Josh calls it episode #33 in his intro, no worries, it's still the next show.) Enjoy AA Podcast #034.

035: Marshwindow

208 weeks ago 01:18:57

The full panel gets together this week to mull over what was a pretty slow week in Android news - Joe had just put out a great review of Android Marshmallow, so that serves as our platform for the majority of the episode. Jonathan Feist, Andrew Grush, Nirave Gondhia, Joe Hindy, and host Joshua Vergara talk video games, homescreen setups, and even cars for a minute because the Marshmallow conversation just naturally veers in that direction. We know that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but you guys should know by now that the digressions come hard and fast for the AA Podcast crew!

But in light of a slow Android news week, we had to talk about the week's biggest news - the return of Windows Mobile. Though Nokia as a company is, for the most part, fully absorbed into Microsoft and virtually unrecognizable, the new Lumia devices did actually get us a little excited for a platform that simply doesn't get a lot of play compared to Android and iOS. Will we dive into the Lumias and do a few off-platform reviews? Only time will tell, but until then we have this conversation about the new announcements.

036: What we won't do for a OnePlus Two

11 months ago 01:12:01

With Joshua Vergara and Joe Hindy sitting this one out, Jonathan Feist leads while Andrew Grush and Nirave Gondhia spend a good amount of time figuring out if OnePlus has a good marketing strategy with the Two, or if they are just a little bonkers. Android Marshmallow continues to roll out, with LG announcing they'll be the first non-Nexus devices to get the update. With all of these new and exciting devices on the market, last generation devices are starting to see some amazing price tags, listen on to find out if we think the Nexus 6 is still a good buy. (My apologies this time folks, the audio quality on this was sub-par, we've since publicly shamed the one that caused the issues and have repaired the problem for next time.) Enjoy AA Podcast #034.

038: OnePlus X and Chromedroid

11 months ago 01:11:13

With Josh Vergara sitting this one out, Jonathan Feist leads while Andrew Grush, Joe Hindy and Nirave Gondhia spend a good amount of time saying really nice things about the OnePlus X and the Samsung Galaxy View. One is a decidedly mid-range smartphone with a fairly small display, the other is a decidedly mid-range tablet with a honkin’ big 18.4-inch display. We are split on our thoughts of a merger between Android and Chrome OS; opinions are all over the place, fueled by the basic uncertainty as to what exactly may or may not happen to Android and that other OS that Google has. Enjoy AA Podcast #038.

039: DROOOOIIIIID

11 months ago 59:32

Josh is joined this week by Jonathan Feist, Andrew Grush, and Joe Hindy as the slow news week winds down. Though it was definitely a slower week than most, that didn't keep the guys from finding things to talk about - exploding spare batteries, wireless chargers, and new VR applications. But the main topics focus upon the DROID line in Verizon and how they believe these phones should be available outside of just that one carrier. 040: Binge On this!

10 months ago 01:09:11

Josh Vergara leads Andrew Grush, Joe Hindy, Jonathan Feist and Nirave Gondhia through an interesting conversation on carriers, the idea was to discuss net neutrality and T-Mobile's new video streaming perks, but we divert into looking at pricing and features. We share some of our own insights on data services in our local areas and for our international travel. From there, Josh and Nirave both have the new BlackBerry Priv in hand, come hear what they have to say about this new Android phone with a slide-out keyboard. Enjoy AA Podcast #040.

041: Subscriptioned to death!

10 months ago 58:18

Joe Hindy and Jonathan Feist get together this week with Josh to talk about the topics of the week, but there weren't too many things to talk about during another slow news week. With the holiday season fast approaching, the guys talk about Black Friday one more time, pondering what items they might want to get if they got out of the house to actually battle the crowds (Joe has already decided that he won't).

But after a few check-ins and some talk about Josh's experience appearing on TWiT's All About Android, the gang checks on their subscription services and risks realizing just how much money they're burning on what has become a micro-payment, subscription-based world. Join us for a really chill but enjoyable episode of the Android Authority Podcast!

Also, this week we will be getting together for a special Thanksgiving episode - so stay tuned!

042: Thanksgiving with AA!

10 months ago 01:36:28

Join us for a very special episode of the Android Authority Podcast! The full panel gets together (Joe Hindy, Jonathan Feist, Nirave Gondhia, Andrew Grush) and follow Josh on a Thanksgiving journey - they talk about the different plans they have for Thanksgiving before getting into the typical talk of what they're grateful for. However, sprinkled among all of that are small rants about family, a bit of wine and whiskey, and talk about what YOU are thankful for! It's the longest episode we might have ever recorded, but it also might be one of the funnest.

If you're coming back from the Black Friday shopping, we hope that you stayed safe. If you're just listening along with your Thanksgiving leftovers, pour the gravy on the turkey and press play!

043: LCD, OLED or Quantum Dot display?

10 months ago 01:21:18

With Joshua Vergara enjoying some time away this December, Jonathan Feist is leading the way with Andrew Grush, Joe Hindy and Nirave Gondhia rounding out the discussions and shenanigans. As we recap our Thanksgiving adventures, the conversation turns to our Black Friday purchases and how the technology behind our new toys may change what we purchase next. Specifically, we explore display technology, share our thoughts on LCD vs OLED vs Quantum Dot, debate how important display resolution is to our Android experience and learn how one of us managed to save Christmas. Enjoy AA Podcast #043.

046: Holiday greetings and bad drivers

9 months ago 58:14

For this holiday week, Jonathan Feist, Andrew Grush and Joe Hindy got together to talk about their plans and the weather. Our boss and a few of our YouTube personalities, including Josh, sent a greeting message for you, and we managed to talk about Google's self driving car initiative for no more than a few seconds before going off track, literally and figuratively. I suppose we should conclude that at least two thirds of our panel would benefit from this expected partnership with Ford.

With just one more show before the end of the year, we want to thank you again, it is your continued support that makes this all possible. We enjoy sharing a laugh with you each week. We hope that you and yours have a wonderful holiday season.

Join us for our last episode of 2015! Jonathan Feist, Andrew Grush, Joe Hindy and Nirave Gondhia are all on board to share a few laughs as we recap our first year of the podcast. We guessed a few things right, and even more wrong, but we joked and laughed through it all. When we eventually recovered from the humor of our year, we finally talked about our hopes and expectations for 2016 and CES, which happens next week. We're stoked to have Josh returning at CES, look for his return in our next episode. This is as good as 'The Best of 2015' as we get, enjoy!

At media event Pepcom the night before CES actually began, the Android Authority Podcast team (with a returning Joshua Vergara) huddled around one of the small standing tables to drink and talk tech, Vegas, and the spectacle that is CES (that hadn't even started yet).

Joining Josh, Nirave, and Edgar is Nicole Scott of MobileGeeks along with appearances by PocketNow's Stephen Schenck, Adam Doud, and a brief Michael Fisher and Jaime Rivera sighting.

It's an hour of craziness as the podcast guests wind down the first couple days of work in Las Vegas.

048: Returning from CES

8 months ago 01:06:27

Pretty much everyone from the AA Podcast got to head to CES and see some great technology - except Joe. With that in mind, Joshua Vergara and Jonathan Feist ask Joe Hindy's opinion as a sort of outsider regarding what went down at the show. The guys end up reacting to Huawei as the apparent star of the show and Joe rants about why the rest of the companies may have dropped the ball this year.

We're all glad to be back home and healthy after the Consumer Electronics Show of 2016, so join us for our return episode of the AA Podcast!

MWC 2016 Podcast with special guests!

7 months ago 01:32:22

It took way too long to get this episode out, but the spotty WiFi connections across Barcelona and the 5+ GB size of the original YouTube edition kept Josh from getting this special podcast out to you earlier. So sorry, but not too much because this episode is still EPIC.

Coming to you live from 'the other side of the pond,' Joshua Vergara is joined by a great group of special guests to bring you this MWC 2016 special episode. Nicole Scott (@nicole_scooter), Jaime Rivera (@jaime_rivera), Michael Fischer (@Captain2Phones) and Myriom Joire (@tnkgrl) all recount their first days of the show in Barcelona, Spain. Talk about the Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5 lead to a spirited discussion on the Launcher situation on Android. Android N is packed with plenty of cool new features, we explore a few of them, including our strong opinions on the App Drawer. Josh was happy to be home from MWC and an extended trip to the UK, only to find himself on the road to Austin for SXSW before this podcast could be produced for your listening pleasure.

Talking VR at SXSW 2016

6 months ago 01:06:11

The Android Authority team goes outside of their general zone and visits SXSW, the film/music/tech festival held in the wonderful city of Austin, Texas! After a few days of getting to know the show itself, Joshua Vergara was joined by co-founder Darcy Lacouvee and Managing Editor Nirave Gondhia to attend a number of panels teaching the in and outs of virtual reality and 360 video. The gist of the panels focused on storytelling, the application of VR for more than just the entertainment business, and the future of the next big thing in content creation.

In this podcast, however, the three were joined by a native Texan now hailing from Louisiana, writer John Dye. Many of you fans of Android Authority have probably read John's writing on the website and enjoyed his way with words.

So, without any further ado, listen (and watch on YouTube) the guys gush about VR cameras and videos!

056: Gotta catch 'em AMOLEDs

6 months ago 01:00:21

Getting back to our normal routine, for one week, Joshua Vergara hosts as Joe Hindy and Jonathan Feist record on a Saturday. We concede that some of the biggest news from the week is the announcement of the new iPhone SE and iPad Pro 9.7, both of which we don't think will disrupt the market at all, but we're looking forward to the iPad coverage over on TabTimes.

Talking about Pokemon Go leads to a quick discussion on AR vs VR technology - some of us think AR is the way of the future, others think VR will win out, but we all agree, there is room to grow. Finally, Joe has to go clean his back yard... No, that's not it, we talked about display technology, we think we like the fact that AMOLED panels can now be produced at a lower cost than LCD, but that is dependent on the resolution.

057: LG G5, Miitomo and April Fool's pranks

6 months ago 01:08:19

With Josh away, Jonathan Feist, Joe Hindy and Nirave Gondhia get up to all sorts of April Fool's Day inspired trouble. This episode is not available in SnoopaVision, there is no Nokia A1 in the works, at least not that we know of, and the best smartphone ever, well, we still think we're on to something.

Joins us as we chat about Nintendo's first attempts at an Android game, Mittomo, we talk about our favorite April Fool's Day pranks as well, but one of our own gets us really thinking, what do we really want out of our ideal Android phone? You had the chance to answer that on the site, and our discussion continually turns to the LG G5, does that mean we think the LG G5 is the ideal phone? Listen on to find out, but one thing is for sure, we know where we stand on the plastic vs metal conversation.

059: Good enough for the Average User

5 months ago 01:17:13

Josh Vergara leads the way for Joe Hindy, Nirave Gondhia and Jonathan Feist to chat about Android stuff. With the goal of chatting about the HTC 10 and TV commercials, Joe gets the panel debating flagship devices and what makes them great, or not great, either way, outrage over all phones being made for the average user prevails. Storage space is the name of the game, as it turns out.

What does make for a flagship? Has the Chromebook ruined manufacturer's expectations of user needs? We try to answer these things, but it may be that 16GB or 32GB of internal storage is here to stay for a while. Andrew Grush returns to join Josh Vergara, Joe Hindy and Jonathan Feist for the latest episode of the AA Podcast. Joe's spirited discussion on what makes a flagship smartphone stand out continues this week, moving the topic more to the software side of things. We didn't talk about Google bringing app awards to the Google I/O conference this year, but we did talk about what we do and do not like about some phones, we think the Motorola Citrus with a Nexus Live Case or DBrand skin wouldn't make the phone any better, but that certainly made us talk about physical buttons.

068: The VRSource Edition!

3 months ago 01:17:08

Coming live from E3 2016 in Los Angeles, Josh is joined by Jonathan Feist and heads of VRSource Android Grush and John Velasco (for his first ever podcast!) to talk video games and VR from the trade show floor. Well, not really, because they couldn't record among the different game vendors and displays but instead had to sit in the South Hall Lobby as the final day of the show winded down.

With VR taking the spotlight at this year's E3, this episode of the podcast becomes basically a VRSource podcast, but the antics are about as #AAPodcast as it can get. John Velasco fits right into the talks as he recounts experiences with the Oculus Rift, the HTC Vive, and Playstation VR! The rest of the guys also share the fun they had escaping from the real world and embracing all kinds of reality!

3 months ago 01:22:10

That's what he said. In a super chill, but overly thoughtful episode, Joshua Vergara, Joe Hindy and Jonathan Feist muse over the release of Pokemon GO in North America and discuss another strong game title hitting Android, Final Fantasy VII is ready for download. Finally, the discussion turns to the ups and downs of beauty mode as a feature of front facing cameras, this after Mel Wells lost all her freckles to a Selfie.

Discussion turns to the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, we have plenty to say, particularly expanding our conversation to talk about modern smartphone needs, features, competitive edge and more. We round out the show with a lively discussion about USB Type-C audio, as opposed to the old 3.5mm jack. Then Nirave fell asleep. In his absence, we discussed Amazon Prime Day for a moment, where Josh shopped for a 1GB hard drive.

2 months ago 01:15:24

Joshua Vergara is joined by Joe Hindy, Jonathan Feist and are happy to have Lanh Nguyen partake in the shenanigans as they round out a short discussion, possibly ending our long running topic of Pokemon. Once that was out of the way, Josh asked the team about their desires for Comic-Con, leading back to a quick chat about messaging applications. Snickers have nougat. Finally, our discussion on the new Motorola (Lenovo) Moto Z line turns into an existential conversation on the review process, USB Type-C audio and how great or terrible mods and customizations can be on the Moto phone.

074: John's car is melting

2 months ago 56:31

With Joshua Vergara away at a Samsung event, Jonathan Feist and Joe Hindy bring John Dye back onto the show - who ends up joining from a coffee shop due to weather issues in his area. A fairly chill conversation ensues, including words like 'reprobate' and attempts to pronounce John Legere. Topics on deck include the new ZTE Axon 7, a slick looking flagship calibre phone that has Bluetooth, Prisma, the app that makes your images look good, and talk about rumors of two Nexus phones coming soon from HTC. Sailfish and Marlin are the codenames for 5.2-inch and 5.5-inch phones with similar specs, save for display resolution, if nothing else.

156 weeks ago 02:10:02

Join Joshua Vergara, Jonathan Feist, Joe Hindy, and a returning Nirave Gondhia as they get together for another fun episode of the Android Authority Podcast! In this episode, it's all about the Google Pixel event where we were treated to announcements of the new Google products for 2016. Before getting into the actual devices and announcements, this week's check-in is largely a talk about Craig David, a favorite recording of artist of Josh and Nirave, who performed at the UK Google event (basically, Josh's FOMO was real). From there, however, the guys get into the big discussions - Google Wifi kicks off the event talk as Feist gives his thoughts on what could be a good solution for in-home connectivity. Google Home comes up next, and the general thoughts were that Home poses an interesting new direction for Google's robust and somewhat scary Learning Matrix. Speaking of the Learning Matrix, a tweet from a happy listener makes the guys ponder if Google's design direction for their products simply masks the fact that Google's services - like Google Assistant - are a bit too smart and somewhat terrifying. And finally the guys get into a big discussion regarding the Google Pixel phones and why they might be a little divisive for fans of Google's previous hardware endeavors - basically, it comes down to Pixel vs Nexus. See the timecodes below to see, roughly, where these topics all take place in the podcast and enjoy this episode of the Android Authority Podcast!

084: We're just full of bad ideas today

11 months ago 01:49:59

In an explosive episode (sorry, I had to do that) Josh and Joe are joined by returning hosts Lanh and David to talk about the week's top Android news. The Galaxy Note 7 discontinuation is obviously the biggest pieces of news and there is ample time given to the topic. However, before all that, David gives his recounting of the Oculus Connect event that he and VRSource covered just a couple weeks back. Lanh gives us his quick podcast review of the Sony Xperia XZ, the full review of which is on Android Authority; and, finally, we talk about Nougat 7.1 and the Developer Preview that basically leaves out Google Assistant.

But perhaps the craziest piece of news actually came from the podcast itself - that Josh has been buying faulty USB-C cables and it actually claimed a victim. Yeah, it's that bad. Josh is inconsolable. Listen to hear more!

11 months ago 01:41:38

Joshua Vergara, Joe Hindy and David Imel give great insight into their personal lives on the latest episode of the Android Authority Podcast. The check in includes a remote hello from Jonathan from Japan, and Josh's experience at the LeEco event in San Francisco. Topics start off with the Google Pixel, talking value and ingress protection, Josh opens up a live Q&A session for the LG V20, a phone that was promoted as the first to sell with Android 7.0 Nougat, but isn't actually out yet.

LeEco had a big event, Josh sounds like he enjoyed it for its dramatic approach, and the affordable Le Pro 3. An electric car, big screen TV and a bicycle made it to the show as well. The chat rounds out with a bit of news and some nostalgia over phones of the past.

Rounding out the show is a fun rumor mill, running down the fun that could be the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the OnePlus 3T.

On a special note, shout out to David Imel and Edgar Cervantes, both are doing well recovering as needed from recent vehicular incidents.

The Porsche Design Huawei Mate 9 reminds us of other expensive brands, leading us to think of products in a theoretical financed world, an exploration of consumerism.

Self exploration continues as we talk the upcoming OnePlus 3T, dreaming of what we want to see in the new device, remembering what the original OnePlus offered. Finally, we close out the show with a chat on Google Home, Google Assistant and Google Daydream VR.

Joshua Vergara and Jonathan Feist are hanging out in LA, taking in the LA Auto Show, or at least Automobility LA, the press version of the show, and the immensely entertaining launch event for the DJI Inspire 2 and Phantom 4 Pro drones. CES 2017 Podcast 3 with Patrick Norton (TekThing)

9 months ago 58:46

Josh sits down with one of the first people that got him into technology - the great Patrick Norton of TekThing and classic TechTV days. They sit down to talk about CES and Patrick goes off about how much he loves music and audio, all in front of the gondola rides of the Venetian Las Vegas.

Unfortunately, the camera cuts out at around the 3 minute mark, but we still uploaded this great episode of the podcast for your listening pleasure. Enjoy this podcast with Patrick Norton!

CES 2017 Podcast 4 (Final)

9 months ago 56:59

The show is over - CES 2017 has come to a close! Josh, Jonathan, Lanh and Andrew Grush hang out for a bit to discuss the best and our favorites from our week in Las Vegas. Phones, laptops, smart cars, drones and so much more. We all agree that AI is the wave of the future, or at least the goal of the manufacturers and products we experienced at the show. Amazon's Alexa was the name we witnessed more than any other, support for the service was everywhere.

This episode breaks into two segments, with the crew coming to you from the closing moments on the show floor, then join Josh and Jonathan as they discuss the future of the podcast. We have great things coming to the Android Authority Podcast, we can't wait to tell you more.

Thank you so much for joining us on this adventure. We hope you enjoyed CES 2017, we certainly did.

095: CES is over, what will Alexa conquer next?

8 months ago 01:17:19

Welcome to the first normal episode of the Android Authority Podcast in 2017! Hosted by Joshua Vergara, Jonathan Feist and David Imel ask Joe Hindy what he thought of CES 2017, enjoying his valuable outsider's perspective. I'm not sure we've had the chance to mention this yet (I'm joking!) but CES seemed to be all about autonomous cars and AI technology - but really, Amazon's Alexa was the star of the show, made available to hundreds of devices and services found on the show floor.

In addition, talk about apps and gaming gets surprised laughs that a prominent pop star is now a character in Final Fantasy, and we learn that Andy Rubin, one of the fathers of Android, is off working on a new phone project.

Joshua Vergara, Jonathan Feist, David Imel and Adam Molina get excited for technology on the 98th episode of the Android Authority Podcast. 8 months ago 01:18:15

Joshua Vergara, Joe Hindy, Jonathan Feist and David Imel officially close out the double digits with episode 99 of the Android Authority Podcast. That might be a lie, with a special episode coming next week, delaying episode 100, but we're close! Topics around the team included love and dating, but specifically how iPhone users have been found to judge Android users poorly. Android Wear 2.0 is rolling out, but is the smartwatch the right medium? Samsung putting the fingerprint scanner beside the camera, weird, but is that a problem? But first, we express that we're not overly worried about the Google Now Launcher exiting the Play Store.

Watch the show on YouTube here:

Joshua Vergara is in Barcelona, Spain. Admittedly, a good group from Android Authority is in Barcelona for MWC 2017, the biggest mobile show of the year. In this special episode of the Android Authority podcast, Josh hangs out independently with Nicole Scott (@nicole_scooter) of Mobile Geeks, she thinks the LG G6 is the winner of the show!

Next up, Juan Carlos Bagnell (@SomeGadgetGuy) of Pocketnow, with his infectious personality, laughs along with Josh. Tablets and laptops join the conversation, as does the Samsung S Pen and wearables. The talk mostly stays on a high level, talking about how people see the various devices and what it's like to attend these fun tech shows. Not to mention that LG G6 screen corner situation.

Last up, as both missed their flights, Michael Fischer (@theMrMobile) of, well, he's Mr. Mobile and Josh hang out for an hour to talk MWC. Fashion starts the chat, with vests and suits. What you really want to hear about, best of the show, behind the scenes at how the guys work and actual tech talk. Wearable tech rears its head, watches are big with these two, as is photography. Last, what are your shortcuts on the Blackberry KEYone keyboard.

Joshua Vergara is in San Francisco for Google I/O 2017. Taking a couple days to let it all sink in, Kris Carlon, Nirave Gondhia, David Imel and Edgar Cervantes join together to chat about the event. Google I/O provided plenty of value to developers, introducing many great new tools that we'll see in products moving forward. Android O was a minor topic directly, but will be the version of the OS that gets all the best in the coming months. 111: Assisted Off the Grid

4 months ago 01:16:17

Joshua Vergara, Jonathan Feist, Joe Hindy and David Imel get together early Sunday morning to chat technology in episode 111 of the Android Authority Podcast. We talk about tech in general, but two main topics guide the show, the HTC U 11 and smart assistants. Apple has a pod now, Amazon's Alexa continues to shine, but Google Home is catching up. The debate turns to software vs experience vs hardware, all the while considering practicality of it all based on current capabilities and limitations.

Warning, we use all of the Personal Assistant trigger words, many times. If "OK, Google", "Alexa", "Echo" or "Computer" are your hotwords, consider using headphones for this show.

That's right, our lovely listeners, the Android Authority Podcast is coming to a close in a couple of episodes. Listen to this week's episode for more information about it and how you can enter to get some love from us during our final episode in a couple of weeks. There is plenty to say about the company's latest phone that comes with a dual camera - speaking of dual cameras, we also talk about the impending LG V30 which should be the flagship announcement for this year's IFA in Berlin.

Thank you all so much for listening to the podcast for these past couple of years, and we hope that you'll be there with us when we hang up our mics the only way we know how - by discussing (and sometimes ranting about) topics in Android as we have every single week.
